Socorro Historic Plaza & Downtown
A living New Mexican town with 400 years of history and great green chile
About Socorro Historic Plaza & Downtown
Socorro is one of New Mexico's most historically significant and genuinely livable small cities, with a downtown plaza and surrounding historic district that reward slow exploration. Founded by Spanish colonists in 1598 and reorganized as a formal municipality in 1816, Socorro sits at the crossroads of the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro and the Rio Grande Valley — a strategic location that made it a major provisioning stop during the Spanish colonial period. Today the city's historic plaza is anchored by the magnificent San Miguel Mission, one of the oldest continuously active church buildings in New Mexico.
The San Miguel Mission, with its massive adobe walls, hand-hewn wooden vigas, and centuries-old santos, is a remarkable survivor of New Mexico's colonial religious heritage. The church has been in continuous use since at least 1819, and historians believe a mission has stood on this site since the late 1600s. The surrounding historic district features Victorian-era commercial buildings from Socorro's silver mining boom years in the 1880s, creating a layered architectural landscape that spans three centuries of New Mexican history.
New Mexico Tech (New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology) gives Socorro a vibrant academic energy that punches well above the city's modest size. The campus's excellent mineral museum is free and open to the public. A handful of excellent restaurants — several of them serving legendary green chile dishes — make Socorro a worthy lunch or dinner destination. The Socorro Farmers Market (seasonal) and various art galleries add to the downtown experience. Don't leave without trying the green chile cheeseburger at one of the local diners.
