Festival of the Cranes
Celebrate New Mexico's great crane migration with world-class birding events
About Festival of the Cranes
The Festival of the Cranes is one of the premier wildlife festivals in the American Southwest, held each November at Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge near Socorro, New Mexico. The festival celebrates the arrival of tens of thousands of sandhill cranes and snow geese to the refuge's managed wetlands — a migration spectacle that has drawn wildlife enthusiasts from around the world for decades. Over four days, the festival transforms Bosque del Apache into a hub of guided tours, photography workshops, birding field trips, and evening programs.
The festival typically takes place the third week of November, timed to coincide with the peak of the crane and goose migration. The event is organized by Friends of Bosque del Apache, a nonprofit that works in partnership with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to manage and promote the refuge. Festival programming includes expert-led birding tours targeting specific species and habitats, nighttime photography workshops during the golden hour crane flyouts, and presentations by biologists, photographers, and conservation advocates.
Even beyond the organized festival events, the third week of November is simply the best time of year to witness the Bosque del Apache spectacle at its most intense. The impoundments are fully loaded with waterfowl, the crane counts are at their peak, and the clear November skies produce spectacular photography conditions. Kiva's proximity — just 35 minutes from the refuge entrance — makes it the logical base camp for the entire festival experience, allowing you to catch morning and evening events without wasting precious wildlife time on a long commute.
