NM Tech Mineral Museum

One of the finest mineral collections in the Southwest — and it's free

About NM Tech Mineral Museum

The New Mexico Tech Mineral Museum, located on the campus of New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology in Socorro, is one of the most significant and well-curated mineral collections in the American Southwest — and admission is free. The museum houses over 10,000 mineral specimens from around the world, with particular strength in New Mexico minerals, Southwest mining history, and spectacular display-quality crystals and gemstones. It is a genuine scientific collection that happens to be accessible to the public, managed by students and faculty of one of the nation's top mining engineering programs.

New Mexico is one of the most mineralogically rich states in the nation, with deposits of turquoise, copper minerals, gold, silver, and dozens of rare species found nowhere else in such variety. The museum's New Mexico collection is especially strong, showcasing specimens from historic mining districts including the Santa Rita copper mine, the Magdalena silver-lead mines, and the Hillsboro gold district. Visitors with even a passing interest in minerals routinely spend far more time here than they planned — the specimens are genuinely extraordinary, displayed with excellent labeling and interpretive context.

The museum also serves as an educational resource for the mining and geology programs at NM Tech, one of the nation's most respected institutions for earth sciences and engineering. The surrounding campus is attractive and worth a short walk — the acequia irrigation channel and mature desert landscaping create a pleasant environment. Combined with a visit to Socorro's historic plaza and a meal at one of the downtown restaurants, the museum makes for a thoroughly satisfying half-day excursion from Kiva.
