Bernardo Waterfowl Management Area

World-class crane and waterfowl viewing — just 3.5 miles from your campsite

About Bernardo Waterfowl Management Area

The Bernardo Waterfowl Management Area is one of New Mexico's premier birding destinations, drawing tens of thousands of migratory sandhill cranes, snow geese, and Ross's geese to its managed wetlands every autumn and winter. Operated by New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, the 1,200-acre property sits in the heart of the Rio Grande Valley flyway — one of the most important migratory corridors in North America. From October through February, the fields and ponds pulse with an almost unimaginable concentration of wildlife.

Each morning, the sky fills with the bugling calls of sandhill cranes as they lift off from their overnight roost in enormous swirling flocks — a spectacle wildlife photographers travel thousands of miles to witness. Snow geese and the smaller Ross's geese join the show in spectacular white clouds, while dozens of raptor species — red-tailed hawks, northern harriers, ferruginous hawks, and the occasional bald eagle — hunt the margins of the fields. Waterfowl hunters and birders alike find the area delivers reliably extraordinary wildlife encounters.

The management area features easily accessible viewing areas along gravel roads, allowing visitors to observe wildlife from their vehicles without disturbing the birds. Spotting scopes and binoculars are rewarded here: look for tundra swans among the crane flocks in peak season, and scan the cottonwood bosque edges for great horned owls and loggerhead shrikes. Even in the off-season, the riparian corridor supports nesting songbirds, raptors, and year-round resident waterfowl.
