Truth or Consequences Hot Springs
Soak in natural geothermal hot springs in New Mexico's most delightfully eccentric spa town
About Truth or Consequences Hot Springs
Truth or Consequences — renamed from Hot Springs in 1950 when the town accepted a challenge from a radio game show — is one of New Mexico's most distinctive and welcoming small cities, built on an extraordinary geothermal resource: naturally hot mineral water that flows at up to 115°F from dozens of wells along the Rio Grande, directly into the private bathtubs and soaking pools of the town's spa hotels and bathhouses. The experience of soaking in a private outdoor pool of 103°F geothermal water while looking out at the Caballo Mountains and desert sky is one of the most deeply relaxing things you can do in New Mexico.
The town's bathhouse district, centered on Main Street and Foch Street, is a dense cluster of independently owned spa hotels, each with its own character and hot spring configuration. Riverbend Hot Springs, perched directly above the Rio Grande, offers outdoor riverside soaking pools. Sierra Grande Lodge offers upscale private-pool spa treatments. The Blackstone Hotsprings has lovingly restored Art Deco cottages with in-room soaking tubs. Most spas welcome drop-in visitors for hourly soaks in addition to offering overnight accommodations, making a day trip from Kiva entirely practical.
Beyond the hot springs, Truth or Consequences has developed a vibrant arts community with galleries, studios, and monthly art walk events. The nearby Spaceport America adds a surreal futuristic dimension to the town's eclectic identity. The annual Fiesta at T or C in May and the Geronimo Days event in October are beloved regional festivals. The proximity to Elephant Butte and Caballo lakes means fishing, boating, and birdwatching are all close at hand.
