Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta

The world's largest hot air balloon festival, 50 minutes from your campsite

About Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta

The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is the largest hot air balloon festival in the world and one of the most photographed events on the planet. Held each year during the first two weeks of October at Balloon Fiesta Park on Albuquerque's north side, the event draws over 500 balloons from around the world and attracts nearly 900,000 visitors over its nine-day run. The combination of Albuquerque's famous "box winds" — which allow balloons to travel in opposite directions at different altitudes — and the backdrop of the Sandia Mountains makes this the premier balloon destination on earth.

The mass ascension events, held at dawn on Saturday and Sunday mornings, are the festival's signature spectacle: hundreds of balloons inflate simultaneously across the launch field and rise into the morning sky in an overwhelming display of color, scale, and beauty. Special Shape Rodeos feature balloons designed as animals, cartoon characters, and fantastical creatures that draw delighted crowds. Evening Glows, where tethered balloons illuminate against the darkening sky in coordinated light shows, are among the most magical experiences in the festival calendar.

Balloon Fiesta week transforms Albuquerque and puts tremendous pressure on local lodging — prices at Albuquerque RV parks spike dramatically, and many fill months in advance. Kiva's location 50 miles south on I-25 offers a practical and economical solution: easy access to the festival each morning without the stress and expense of Albuquerque's peak-season lodging crunch. The I-25 drive north to the festival is straightforward, and returning to the quiet of Bosque each evening is a genuine pleasure after a day in the festival crowds. Alternatively, the New Mexico Rail Runner Express commuter train runs from the Belen station — just 20 minutes from Kiva — into downtown Albuquerque and even onward to Santa Fe, giving visitors a car-free option for exploring the city on non-Fiesta days.
