ABQ BioPark
Zoo, aquarium, botanic garden, and fishing pier — Albuquerque's most complete family attraction
About ABQ BioPark
The ABQ BioPark is Albuquerque's comprehensive natural attractions complex, encompassing a full zoo, a Rio Grande-themed aquarium, beautifully designed botanical gardens, and a fishing pier along the river — all connected by a scenic narrow-gauge railroad. The BioPark is one of the most diverse and well-maintained municipal natural attractions complexes in the Southwest, drawing over 1.2 million visitors annually and consistently earning high marks from families, naturalists, and design enthusiasts for the quality of its exhibits and landscaping.
The Rio Grande Zoo is the centerpiece of the BioPark, with over 250 species housed in thoughtfully designed naturalistic habitats that emphasize behavioral enrichment and conservation education. African savanna exhibits, the polar bear complex, and the Arizona-Sonora desert gallery are among the most impressive installations. The Albuquerque Aquarium focuses on the Rio Grande ecosystem and the Gulf of Mexico, with a stunning 285,000-gallon shark tank as its signature exhibit. The Botanic Garden features exceptional examples of New Mexico's native flora and internationally significant Japanese and Mediterranean garden installations.
The Rio Grande BioPark, a wild bosque section of the property, connects to the city's trail system and offers a genuine naturalistic experience alongside the managed exhibit areas. The whole complex can easily fill a full day, and the ticket combinations offered by the BioPark make it economical to experience multiple attractions. For families traveling through central New Mexico, the BioPark represents an outstanding rainy-day option or a planned destination in its own right.
